St Mary's Hospice @stmaryshospice
We love hearing about the many ways you support St Mary’s Hospice – our patients and their families – by fundraising. St Mary’s trustee Andy James took on a basketball challenge as part of his 50-50 list! Here’s Andy’s story ….
“Having hit the ripe old age of 50, I have been undertaking a '50-50' list of 50 things I might not otherwise do (not a bucket list just yet!).As part of this list I decided to a charity fundraising challenge. I decided to do this in support of St Mary's Hospice in Ulverston. I lost my father to Motor Neurone Disease a number of years ago. He received great care from a hospice local to him in Surrey. This inspired me to become involved with St Mary’s Hospice, and last year I became a trustee. I have come to understand and appreciate the wonderful and important work done by the staff and volunteers.
I am still managing to play competitive basketball, despite creaking knees, so I chose to do a basketball related challenge. On 19th November, I undertook to score 50x50 points, which is 2500 points - 1250 baskets. I followed a circuit of 10 positions around the basket, taking shots from distances of between 8 and 15 feet. A number of my team mates from my basketball team generously gave up some time to support me during the challenge.
It was a tough challenge, but one that I am pleased to have completed – it took me just under 6 hours of shooting. I actually took 2133 shots over that time, finishing with a long-range ‘3-pointer’.My knees, back and shoulders were pretty sore at the end of it, but I am delighted to have been able to make a small contribution St Mary’s fundraising efforts. I am extremely grateful to everyone who generously sponsored me in the challenge.”
Andy’s current sponsorship stands at £695 (£812.50 including gift aid). Please follow the link If you would like to donate to Andy’s challenge! http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AJ_50-50
Andy’s fundraising so far can be converted into care: £812.50 can enable 98 delicious meals on our Inpatient Unit (based on £8.30 per meal), 43 hours of
care @ £19 per hour, or enable nine people to attend day care @ £87 per session, enabling us to support patients and their loved ones when the need
it most. Big thank you to Andy!
