Hospice Care Week Story - Katy 13-Oct-2017
Katy is the Health and Safety and Facilities Manager. Undertaking all aspects of health and safety alongside building and garden maintenance.
“I like the wide range of areas and tasks that my role covers. I have lots of interaction with different people and I get to visit the St Mary’s retail
shops and warehouse. I also oversee the gardeners and I was so proud that we won the best care home/residential home garden award.
My role is very hands on, I’m on our ward at least every day doing safety checks or organizing repairs, it can be as simple as me changing a light
bulb to getting a contractor in. I like to look into service contracts to get us the best deals, it’s a great feeling knowing I’m helping to save
money and improve services.
Working for St Mary’s has changed my perception of the amazing work that’s done in the hospice but also in the community. Because I’ve been through
the personal experience of having a loved one cared for here it makes you want to go that extra mile. I started this role so soon after my loss
it just felt like it was meant to be.
I am always willing to help patients and visitors outside of my role. Our nurses in IPU had asked me to help a terminally ill gentlemen hook up his
iPad to the telly in his room. Although we couldn’t get it working he and his family were so pleased for someone to take the time to try and help
