St Mary's Hospice @stmaryshospice
We’re privileged to meet many St Mary’s supporters over the years. Barbara is one of our original Walk to Remember walkers who has completed the walk every year since it started in 2006. Barbara is supported by her husband Barry who also marshals for this special event.
Barbara is inspirational and does many fundraising activities to support St Mary’s and the Oncology unit – whether it’s knitting, parachute jumping, walking etc! Barbara says: “Having cancer myself inspired me to help. When I attended the cancer support group at Hartington Street, I got to know the Hospice team. I was one of the first to sign up for the first ever walk!”
“The first walk was buzzing! I started at Asda and went up the hill. The walk changed route after that. Taxi drivers used to beep at us. It was a wonderful atmosphere with lots of flashing lights. Over the years lots of funny things have happened including two women hiding beers!”
During the ten years Barbara has completed the walk by herself and in groups. “It’s always been such a marvellous event. It’s for causes close to my heart. You never know if you may need the hospice one day.” And Barry says he cannot wait for the walk!
Barbara’s advice for anyone is to “Do it!”. If you are interested in signing up for Tenth Walk to Remember you can register online at: via the link: www.stmaryshospiceulverston.yapsody.com or for volunteering – like Barry - on the night please call our fundraising team on 01229 580305.
