South Lakes Social Cyclists Success!

In July 2016 a team of “South Lakes Social Cyclists” successfully completed the Coast to Coast Challenge, fundraising on behalf of St Mary’s Hospice. The team cycled the challenging Coast to Coast route: also known as the “W2W” Walney to Whitby. Taking the brave group 152 miles over two days on 23rd and 24th July 2016.

Mark Barnes initially suggested the idea to the group: “I first thought of a challenging bike ride back in November. As so many of our cycling friends were keen to do it, I suggested we do it for charity, we all have our own choice of charity and we thought it best to just have one.”
The cyclists have raised in the region of a whopping £7,705 for St Mary’s Hospice. The SLSC chose to benefit St Mary’s as a local charity through family and friends experience of the hospice and to ensure more people can access the hospice’s services and support.

The group includes:Mark Nickson, Paul Braithwaite, Nick Little, Paul Battersby, Mark Carroll, Chris Ritchie, Peter Skryme, Mark Barnes, Roger Sheard, Steve Darwick and Ben Patterson. And were supported by a back-up crew of Christine Barnes and Fiona Battersby.

The group initially set a fundraising target of £2,500 – a target which they have smashed! To give you an idea of what level of care their efforts could be converted into, this could provide: 928 delicious meals on St Mary’s Hospice Inpatient Unit, 406 Hours of patient care or enable 88 patients to attend Day Care. So every mile was worth it!

"I've been cycling now for about 4 years and already raised money for various charities. I'm happy to cycle and help raise funds for this extremely worthy cause ....and the amazing staff at the hospice in Ulverston." Chris Ritchie

Local business including garages generously got involved to help with money towards accommodation and supplies enabling the trip to happen. The group want to say a big thank you to Ashworth Street Garage - Dalton, Cumbria Tyres -Ulverston, Athersmiths Motor Services garage – Ulverston, Lloyds Motor services – Barrow, Tudor Car Services Limited – Barrow, Little Tony’s Tyre Shop – Barrow, and Freelance Mechanics – Barrow, Roosecote Service Station, Columba Garage, Crooklands Autobody, Longlane Garage, Foundry Street Garage, Emlyn Street Tyre Services, Chris Ritchie Garage Services, Topmark Cycles and Greens Pies.
