Light up a Life

Christmas is a traditional time of celebration, a time of sharing, a time to reflect with friends and relatives, but also can be an emotional time for many of us. At this special time of year, one of the most important events in the Hospice calendar takes place, Light up a Life.

Through our Light up a Life campaign, St Mary’s Hospice offers a unique opportunity to honour those special to us, by dedicating a light on our special tree.

Over the past 11 years thousands of people have sponsored a light on the St Mary's tree. Families close to home, children who have donated their pocket money or companies remembering valued members of staff. Throughout the Christmas period, hundreds of lights shine out from our tree, each one a special gift for that someone special, a way of remembering them, as they were, a shining light in our lives.

Taking part

If you would like a light for your loved one this year, you can do so by filling in a Nomination Form or call 01229 580305.

For each donation we will:

  • Dedicate a light on our tree.
  • Record the name of your loved one in our Book of Dedication, along with your short message.
  • Invite you to our special services to join other members of the community in remembering and honouring loved ones.

The Services

The services are very close to our hearts; what started out as a small event at the Hospice has grown to accommodate people attending in their hundreds.

This year we will be holding three Light up a Life services, to provide everyone in the local community with the opportunity to come together, reflect and remember someone special:

  • Thursday 1st December, 7pm – The Banqueting Hall, Town Hall, Barrow-in-Furness.
  • Sunday 4th December, 4pm - St Mary's Catholic Church, Victoria Road, Ulverston.
  • Sunday 11th December, 3pm - The Methodist Church, Kents Bank Road, Grange-over-Sands

Special Light up a Life trees will be set up for the services and will bear a light dedicated to your special someone and will remain illuminated over the Christmas period at the Hospice. In addition, all the names of loved ones will be entered in our special Light up a Life Order of Service.
