What we do
When someone is very ill, everyone in the family is affected.
St Mary’s Hospice looks beyond the treatment of the physical symptoms to consider the emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients, families and their friends.
Family members often do not see themselves as “carers” because they have a very different relationship with the person that is ill however they play such a vital and pivotal role in supporting the patient and in ensuring their wishes are heard and met. This can be both physically and emotionally demanding.
We understand and appreciate many of these stresses that people are facing; we work closely with many local agencies such as Carer agencies (Furness Carers, South Lakeland Carers) who offer the family member a “carer assessment” which can open up many avenues of practical and emotional support specifically aimed at their needs.
