Pam’s Story – Caligraphy Memorial Book Volunteer

I have been a volunteer at St Mary’s Hospice for about a month now; however it is something I have wanted to do for many years. The reason I wanted to volunteer was to give something back to the Hospice for the wonderful, caring, medical and emotional support they gave my Mam in 2003. They not only provided her with support but were also there for the rest of my family, and for that I can’t thank them enough.

My role is to keep the Book of Remembrance and Index Book up to date and this is done on a monthly basis. I particularly enjoy this as I believe it really important for relatives to be able to visit the Hospice and see their loved ones names written neatly in the book. The thought of bringing comfort in this way feels very rewarding.

In 2003 my Mam was admitted to St Mary’s Hospice for her end of life care and whilst there received exemplary treatment and support in a very calm environment, allowing her to die comfortably and with dignity. Because of this I regard it as a very special place and always will.

If you are thinking of volunteering but are not sure about applying, all I can say is please do it! Since starting at the Hospice everyone has been so helpful and friendly and I have been given guidance, support and encouragement. For me personally, it is so nice to feel like I am part of a team again and it’s fulfilling to know I am giving my time up for a worthy cause.

Thank you Pam for sharing your story
