St Mary’s Inpatient Unit – reopened and refurbished!

It is not always possible for people to be cared for at home and St Mary’s inpatient beds are vital for patients who require more support for complex needs, want respite care or those individuals who wish their end of life care to be at the hospice.

On Monday 13th April St Mary’s proudly re-opened four beds on its Inpatient Unit to patients and families after temporarily closing while recruiting for senior medical cover to oversee the beds. Our Hospice at Home team increased its services throughout this time to meet the needs of our community and this also presented an opportunity to refurbish the unit to maintain and improve its up to date, homely environment and facilities. This has been a big project achieved through the hard work of staff and local suppliers:

Kate Davison, St Mary’s Integrated Team Sister: “We are delighted with how lovely the rooms look – they are bright, airy and homely, we have also had the opportunity to put a visitor kitchen on the IPU making drinks/foods more accessible for people visiting patients. In addition, the reception area offers a warm welcome.”

Katy Millard, St Mary’s Health & Safety and Facilities Manager, who project managed the transformation said “We would like to thank the following companies for their great work during the refurbishment, some of whom continued under difficult circumstances: Bryan Moncur Painters & Decorators, A Barnes Electrical, Slade Plumbing & Heating, Justin McMullen & Keith Farish, Atlas Stern’s, Castle Alarms, Frank Edwards of Elliot & Edwards, Ocean Construction, Evalast Home Improvements Ltd., Mike Foster of SLDC Building Control, Travis Perkins, Nationwide Fire Training. The dedication of these firms really helped to ensure we could reopen our beds to patients. We also have our new visitor kitchen, built using the amazing donations from the Co-op Community Grant.”
