Helping people living with Dementia
Our dementia service is dedicated to providing comprehensive support, advice and holistic care to individuals and their carer’s. We tailor our service to the individual’s needs which includes therapeutic and meaningful activities that enhance the quality of life for our service users.
Situation
Since 2001 the mortality rate for dementia has increased by 60%. Thus becoming the number one cause of mortality. St Mary’s serve an aging population not a growing population so we know the need in our area is high. Our vision is for dementia to be accepted as a palliative condition, ensuring that individual’s receive equitable access to supportive services from the point of diagnosis. We envision a world where stigma is eradicated, allowing people with dementia to live full, meaningful lives
Solution
We want to build a framework that empowers our communities. Our aim is to ensure caregivers have the skills and knowledge to support their loves ones and to ensure they promptly access end of life care when required. We will provide compassionate, person- centered and effective symptom management enabling individuals to live their life to their potential and to receive dignity, care and choices at the end of their life.
Campaign Aims
- Introduce a dementia toolkit and training across our clinical team which means every individual who comes to St Mary’s will receive person centered care that caters for their individual needs.
- Become part of a wider dementia community with our local partner’s to ensure we are all working towards the same goal.
- Assemble a St Mary’s Hospice Dementia Champions Group.
- Introduce a structured approach to dementia training and education for health and social care staff. This will standardise training, improve quality and consistency and ensure that staff have the necessary skills to support people living with dementia.
