New Windermere Dementia Café to Open at the Ladyholme Centre

St Mary’s Hospice dementia team are expanding their support into South Lakes.

The hospice is delighted to announce the opening of a brand-new Dementia Café in Windermere, launching on Tuesday 10th February, 10.30am–12.30pm, at the welcoming Ladyholme Centre. The café will offer a warm, inclusive space for people living with dementia and their carers to enjoy companionship, gentle activities, advice, and specialist support.

Dementia Cafés play an essential role in reducing isolation, increasing confidence, and strengthening community connections. Visitors can expect a relaxed atmosphere where they can take part in creative and wellbeing activities, meet others facing similar experiences, and access guidance from dementia specialists. Carers are welcome to join in or take some time out for respite, knowing their loved one is supported.

The launch of the Windermere Café comes at a time of celebration for the hospice dementia team, following the outstanding success of their recent Dementia Unmuted Festival for which they won a ‘highly commended’ award at the Dementia Care Awards 2025. The festival brought together art, music, dance, film, storytelling and community action across Furness, showcasing what becomes possible when people living with dementia are placed at the heart of co-production and their community.

Building on this momentum, the team is committed to bringing the same energy, creativity and community involvement to the South Lakes.

Sophie, Dementia Specialist Nurse at St Mary’s Hospice, said: “We know there is a real need for accessible, dementia-friendly support in the Windermere area, and we’re truly passionate about being part of this community. Staying well with dementia means caring for every aspect of wellbeing including physical health, social connection, emotional resilience, a sense of purpose, and spiritual life. Our hope is to create a warm, welcoming space where people can experience all of these, feel understood and valued, and know they don’t have to face dementia alone.”

The hospice dementia team is continuing to widen its reach across Millom, South Lakes and Furness, working alongside local communities and partners to create meaningful, accessible opportunities for people affected by dementia.

The team warmly invites anyone living with dementia, along with their family members or carers, to come along to the new Windermere Dementia Café and experience a warm welcome, a cup of tea, and a supportive space to connect.
