St Mary’s Hospice says a heartfelt “Thank You” to its community

St Mary’s Hospice is celebrating Thank You Week – a time dedicated to recognising and honouring the incredible generosity of its staff, volunteers, and the local community who make its care possible.

With less than 20% of its funding coming from the government, the hospice relies on the kindness and commitment of the public to keep its doors open. Without this support, St Mary’s would face closing as early as mid-March. Instead, thanks to the community, the hospice continues to provide free, expert and compassionate care to patients and their loved ones when it matters most.

At the hospice 8 out of 10 patients are cared for because of voluntary income – raised through shopping in hospice shops, enjoying a meal in the Orangery Café, fundraising events, regular giving, and the hospice lottery. A further 1 in 5 patients are cared for thanks to the extraordinary generosity of gifts left in wills.

Head of Fundraising, Helen Carlson, said: “Thank You Week is our chance to pause and reflect on the extraordinary support that makes St Mary’s possible. Every purchase, every pound raised, every gift of time, and every donation ensures that patients and families receive the specialist care they need. We are truly humbled by the kindness of our community – you are the heartbeat of the hospice.”

The hospice will be marking Thank You Week with messages of appreciation across its social media channels and within the hospice itself.

“Whether you’ve donated, fundraised, volunteered, shopped, eaten with us, or pledged a gift in your will – you have made a real difference,” added Helen. “From all of us at St Mary’s, thank you for standing with us.”
