Compassionate Communities
Introducing the Compassionate Communities Team
We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our Compassionate Communities Team – a powerful step forward in how we support people facing death, dying, and grief across Furness and South Lakes.
Compassionate Communities is a global movement that recognises that end-of-life care isn’t just the responsibility of health services—it belongs to us all. It’s about empowering people and communities to talk more openly about death, dying, and loss, and to support each other alongside formal care services like those offered by St Mary’s Hospice.
Connecting Communities Through Compassion
At St Mary’s, we believe that by connecting and supporting individuals, neighbourhoods, and organisations, we can harness the power of compassion to build a healthier, kinder, and more resilient community.
We’re lucky to already have a wealth of incredible community support in our area—charities, local groups, and councils doing vital work to combat loneliness and isolation. Our Compassionate Communities Team is here to complement that work, making sure people living with long-term or life-limiting illnesses—and those caring for them—get the understanding, connection, and support they deserve, especially in the last year of life.

Our Mission
Build strong, trusting relationships with local communities—listening, learning, and helping remove barriers to accessing hospice support.
Open up honest conversations about death, dying, and grief through community events, talks, and death cafés.
Collaborate with others, including community groups, networks, charities, and statutory services—because we’re stronger together.
Deliver engaging education sessions that raise awareness of hospice care, increase confidence in supporting others, and share practical knowledge around end-of-life experiences.
Together, we can create a culture where no one faces serious illness, death, or bereavement alone.
